Impressions from the '05 Gas Gas Dealer's meeting, held in the
Catskills, outside of Albany, NY on the weekend of August 27-29:
I especially enjoyed two of the seminars I attended on Saturday:
One was by John Wycoff (sp?), a consultant for the motorcycle
industry, and columnist for the monthly magazine "Motorcycle Product
News. He shared some really productive ideas with us, to help us stay
in business in today's super competitive climate.
The other was by the Marrazocchi Italy tech man "Pedro". (nickname)
Pedro will be tuning all the "Zoke forks for the factory riders at the
upcoming ISDE. (Factory riders first, and not just Gas Gas.) His
seminar was almost 4 hours long, and covered both the 45 mm and 50 mm
Marrazocchi "Shiver" forks. He took us through service, and ended up
spending well over an hour on haw to fine tune and set the forks up
for our riders. There were a bunch of really neat tips shared with us.
(All the '05 Gas Gas full sized off-road and Super-motard bikes come
stock with 45 mm inverted Marrazocchi "Shiver" forks, except for the
MC250. They come stock with the 50 mm inverted "Shiver" forks.
Ohlins forks are still available as an "upgrade" for an extra fee.
During the meeting, our importer told us that 1 out of every three
US ISDE rider would be aboard a Gas Gas in '05. Three out of four of
the US Junior Team will be riding Gas Gas bikes.
The '05 Gas Gas bikes:
The new bikes were good. They decreased the rake of the chassis, to
make them turn even quicker, yet they still seemed really stable.
The '05 Gas Gas models all have white side panels and black radiator
shrouds, with different color graphics. They will fit models back to
'00.
All the '05 Gas Gas DE models will come standard with Hebo "Pro-Taper
style" bars, and a number plate, instead of lights. The lower price
will reflect the lower cost of outfitting the DE Models. An optional
"bolt-on" lighting kit will be available from the dealers for a very
reasonable cost.
The EC models will come equipped just as they did for '04.
The 200, 250, and 300 cc two stroke engine cases have been recast,
and are lighter and more compact.
The fuel tank is basically the same as on my '04 EC300, but the cap
is back to a normal size, and there is a "straight shot" into the main
part of the tank.
Clark is working on a new 4 gallon tank for us.
Of all the new bikes, I was most impressed by the '05 FSE450. The
engine was redesigned. It now makes an extra two hp from bottom to
top, which brings the (dynojet rear wheel) horsepower output up to 49.
The kickstarter is about two inches longer than before.
The electric starter was moved to the rear of the cylinder for
protection.
The electric starter drive was redesigned to use only one
intermediary gear, and the starter clutch is larger, with real clutch
plates, instead of the previous positive lock steel system.
Thanks to the influence of the Gas Gas Super Motard's racing team
development, the '05 FSE450 now has a "slipper" clutch, just like the
serious road racers. On the steep 45 degree downslope of the track,
when I shifted into third and then chopped the throttle, engine
braking was less than half that of the '04 FSE 450 that I had just got
off of only 5 minutes before. (They required us to ride them "back to
back" for comparison.)
The '05 FSE 450 now weighs 246 lbs with a full tank of fuel. (The
engineer told me personally, when I asked.
The "Wild HP" racing quads available in three versions:
1. 300cc two-stroke
2. 300cc two-stroke with reverse
3. 450cc four-stroke. (The engine is identical to the '05 FSE450
engine.)
The Pampera is unchanged, and is still available in 250 and 280 cc
engine sizes.
The "Pro" trials bikes are basically unchanged, except for
refinements. They are still the lightest around, and are working
better than ever.
There are still a few of the TXT 280 bikes left. They are the last to
be manufactured. When gone, they will be gone for good.
There is a large sale on the '04 off-road models remaining in the
Gas Gas warehouse stock.
The Hebo riding gear changes styles on alternating years.
This was the year for the trials riding gear to be changed. It looked
very good, (but you won't catch me running around, or riding, in one
of those ultra-thin one piece trials riding suits. I might strike
someone blind with only one look.
.
The Hebo off-road riding gear is unchanged from '04. It's still the
best quality riding clothing on the market.
If you have any questions, just call me on the toll free number,
